Fishing at Sunset
Originally called “Sunset Malta Best Time to Fish” by the artist and changed by Portland Gallery to “Fishing at Sunset”. Painted in 2004. This was inspired by some photographs taken looking directly into the sun in Malta.
In the resulting painting Rolf particularly liked the use of opposite colours, red and deep translucent green. The green creates a great impression of looking down throughout the water, especially in the shadow of the various boats. The reflection of the brilliant sunlight bouncing off the waves works very well and the way the colour of these reflections moves from pearl white through to brilliant yellow contrasts so well with the red and pink colours on the surface of the waves.
The painting was released in a limited edition of 395 plus 40 artist’s proofs on paper and 125 plus 10 artist’s proofs on canvas in 2006.
A great investment opportunity for the future.

The last appearance of Andrew is before the Passover Festival in Jerusalem, after the triumphal entry on the first Palm Sunday. Some Greeks came up to Phillip with the request, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus”. Philip told his friend Andrew, and together they told Jesus. Andrew once again seems to have been the willing witness and missionary, introducing first his own brother, Peter, then the boy with the loaves and fishes, and finally a Gentile delegation to Jesus.
From this evidence alone, the Character of Andrew emerges with some clarity. He is identified as “the brother of Simon Peter”. Again, although he was called “the first called” and introduced his brother to Jesus, he was rarely included within the “inner circle”. Compared with his bombastic brother, Andrew emerges as a sensitive and approachable man who always had time and patience to listen to enquiries, even from children and foreigners. He was a selfless and considerate man who did not resent the leadership of his brother. Although himself a Jew, he enables Greeks to meet Jesus and he has been called the first “Home-Missionary” as well as the first “foreign” missionary of the Christian Church.
From the 2nd C, a whole series of apocryphal Acts concerning Andrew appear, most are pious fables and contribute little to the character found in the canonical Gospels. The “Acts of Andrew and Mattias”, probably a 6th c. work, describe his activities in “the town of cannibals”, also referred to as “the town of dogs”. There follow the “Acts of Paul and Andrew”, such diverse and numerous “Acts” may preserve the simple historian kernel of fact that Andrew and one other apostle preached the Gospel among people. There is at least a possibility that for part of Andrew’s mission, his companion was his brother Peter.
The early tradition of the scattering of the apostles and the allocation of their missionary fields, within the Eleona cave on the Mount of Olives, mentions Scythia as Andrew’s region of responsibility. The “Father of Church History”, Eusebius (270-339) confirms this.

Now Scythia was the classical term for the wild steppelands beyond the Carpathians and the Caucasus, that is, the territory to the north-east of the Roman Empire, which is today part of South Russia – beyond the Danube and north of the Black Sea. The Scythians were colloquially the uncivilised “barbarians”; Josephus describes them as “little different from wild beasts” (Contra Apion 2.37).
Certainly in that area there were no Jewish colonies or synagogues to form a basis for a Christian mission and the savage populace might figuratively be described as a “town of cannibals” or “town of dogs”. Peter’s first letter within the New Testament is addressed to “Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia” which together with Sinope, border on Scythia to the south of the Black Sea.
Perhaps it is not surprising that these crude and primitive should link the mission of the two brothers, and in the area indicated by Peter’s own correspondence, within the New Testament canon.
The second tradition places the sphere of Andrew’s mission in Greece. The anonymous 2nd “Acts of Andrew” relate his journey from Pontus, his landing in Achaia, his journey to Macedonia, his sailing to Byzantium, and his return through Thrace and Perinthus to Philippi and Thessalonica where, although thrown to wild beasts in the stadium, Andrew somehow survived.
There he had a vision of his brother Peter saying to him, “Draw near to me, stretch out thy hands so as to join them unto mine, and put thy head by my head. I am the word of the cross whereon thou shalt hang shortly, for his name’s sake”.

- 1895: Victorious defender of the 1895 America's Cup
1895
Defender is Nathanael Greene Herreshoff's second victorious defender. The boat is designed in the utmost secrecy and her construction shrouded in mystery. No one was allowed to enter the yard, especially not press or photographers.
In building Defender, the Herreshoff brothers' special innovation is the use of Aluminum. But, just after the boat is launched, is becomes evident that is suffers from a little known phenomenon: corrosion due to electrolysis. This type of construction allowed a weight saving of 17 tonnes over classical building methods.
During the defence selection trials, Defender sails against Vigilant, Volunteer and Jubilee. During the final, only Vigilant (1893) skippered Charlie Barr races against Defender. On August 10 Vigilant notches up a win. Defender does not finish due to rig problems. Defender strikes back on August 29 and 30 with two easy wins against Vigilant and is selected to defend the America's Cup against the British yacht Valkyrie III.

The first one: 15 miles to windward off Scotland Lightship and return.
The second one: equilateral triangle, 30 nautical miles

ENDEAVOUR

- 1934: Challenger, defeated in the 15th America's Cup by the defender Rainbow
Endeavour was defeated in the 1934 America's Cup by the defender Rainbow by a three to two score, one of the closest series in history. Endeavour raced the 1935 British yachting season when Yankee visited Europe winning nine times against eight wins for Yankee. Sold in 1936 to Herman A. Andreae.
In 1937, Endeavour, chartered by Andreae to Fred Sigrist and Philip Hall, made another passage to the US and won. Skippered by Captain Ted Heard, it handed Ranger one of its two losses in 1937.
Laid up at the Camper & Nicholson Gosport Yard in 1938 and then towed to a mud berth it was bought in 1947 by Charles Kiridge who sold her to Richard and Renée Lucas. Twenty years later, they sold Endeavour to some Americans. The Maritime Trust took charge of it for a time before it was bought by Mr. & Mrs. Amos and Graham Jack. In 1979, they started a six year restoration project.
In the Autumn of 1984, Elizabeth Meyer bought Endeavour and rebuilt it from 1984 to 1989. Builder/refit: Elizabeth Meyer, Calshot Spit, UK, then Royal Huisman Shipyard, Netherlands. Re-launched in May 20th, 1989. Sold in 2001 to L. Dennis Kozlowski.

- 1893: Victorious defender of the eighth America's Cup (1893). Winner over Valkyrie II (GBR).
Vigilant was the first victorious defender designed and built by the ingenious American designer, nicknamed the Wizard of Bristol, Nathanael Greene Herreshoff. Nat Herreshoff repeated this success in 1895, 1899, 1901, 1903 and in 1920.
Vigilant won the 1893 American selection trials for the Cup defence and had beaten Colonia, Jubilee and Pilgrim.
America's Cup races: Sailed October 7 to 13, 1893 in New York
Best three out of five races.

Biography : The impressionistic painter Professor August Alexander Wendehals
was born in Warburg - Ossendorf in 1934. In 1949 he began his artistic
education with Anton Plass and Gottfried Beyer. He has achieved a great

exhibitions across Europe and in Canada and in the US since the 1970s. His
work has continued to attract interest since his death and he is regarded as
a forerunner to the popular Howard Behrens.
